The Saddest Stories Of The Week

3.) All of us have been riveted by the new season of Austrailia’s Top Model (You haven’t? You have a life? That must suck). Kelsey or Amanda, Amanda or Kelsey… I haven’t slept in weeks. I was just happy the wait was over when Kelsey was announced as the winner. Until…

2.) Comedian Greg Giraldo died after four days in a coma. The cause of death was an accidental overdose of prescription medication. Televised roasts will be poorer for the loss.

1.) Can’t find anything funny about this one. Tyler Celmenti, a Rutgers freshman (from my ancestral hometown of Ridgewood, NJ), killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. This stemmed from the night his new roommate Dharun Ravi left his webcam on when he was asked to give Tyler the room for a while. He went to Molly Rei’s room and tweeted:

Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into Molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.

Two days later, Ravi tweeted this:

Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.

The next day, Tyler left the following post on his Facebook page, two minutes after downloading the app to his phone:

Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.

His body was pulled from the Hudson River today after a week in the water.

I understand that 18-year-olds do cruel and thoughtless things to each other; I understand that the Internet makes behavior that would be unthinkable in real life acceptable; I understand that kids freak out when they’re outed publicly before they’re ready. I guess I just wish that Tyler had been assigned a better roommate.
