“Your kid… I just don’t know” becomes “Our kid is amazing.” “[Enter team here]… what a bunch of fucking losers” becomes “We won the title.” “I can’t stand this company a second longer” becomes “Our stock has tripled in two years.”
And “The fucking government is run by a Muslim socialist and they can suck another nickel of tax money from my cold, dead asshole” and “This fascist government is nothing but a bunch of war criminals, polluters and capitalist stooges” somehow joins together to become “WE GOT OSAMA BIN LADEN!”
Don’t get me wrong… I don’t have any real problem with killing Osama bin Laden. Not every butterfly is sacred, and some people deserve to die. Taking him alive would have been a legal, security and public relations nightmare… it’s better to just be done with it. Plus, this now makes Obama the undisputed Muslim leader for the entire world.
And as open as I am to the idea of violent revolution in the U.S., I’ll take a megachurch hypocrite like George W. over a Sharia-law-level fundamentalist like Osama any day. Once revolutionaries changed from Socialist firebrands to Islamic nutjobs, the bloom came off the rose a little bit.
But it seems odd that the only time Americans invoke the word “we” when referring to ourselves is when we’ve tasted blood, either our own or somebody else’s. And the rest of the time?
“I am not saying that Barack Obama is a fascist. If I’m not mistaken, in the early days of Adolf Hitler, they were very happy to line up for help there as well. I mean, the companies were like, ‘Hey, wait a minute. We can get, you know, we can get out of trouble here. They can help, et cetera, et cetera.” – Glenn Beck
“He has no place in any station of government and we need to realize that he is an enemy of humanity.” – AZ Rep. Trent Franks
“Obama’s got a health care logo that’s right out of Adolf Hitler’s playbook … Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate.” – Rush Limbaugh
“[An] Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug.” – Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams
BTW, this isn’t to ignore that you could find the same kinds of quotes (minus the racist tinge) about George W. Bush. Which is fine, really… in a republican democracy, some mean things are going to be said. Plus, The Daily Show wouldn’t be as good without this nonsense.
But, make no mistake… Osama bin Laden wasn’t killed yesterday by the strong will and tenacity of the American people. He was killed by a couple of dozen of young men, using the same brute force and morally fuzzy tactics that one side rails about. And he was killed because of the leadership of the President and the massive bureaucracy he has at his disposal, which the other side loves to demonize. The rest of us had literally absolutely nothing to do with it, except for maybe the small percentage of a penny we contributed to the mission in taxes.
You can rail against the government from whatever side, you can talk about how the country is going to hell, you can call the President a murderer, a socialist, a simpleton, whatever. But then don’t jump on the bandwagon the second something goes right, and talk about “We did it!” and “U.S.A. rules!” You sound like an idiot.
